The world of music royalties can be confusing. Many artists leave money on the table because they do not understand the different types of royalties they generate.
1. Master Royalties
This is the money generated from the actual audio recording (the master). Every time someone plays your song on Spotify or Apple Music, a master royalty is paid to whoever owns the recording. If you are independent, that is you!
2. Mechanical Royalties
Mechanical royalties are generated when a song is reproduced digitally or physically. This includes interactive streams on Spotify, digital downloads, and physical CD sales. These are paid to the songwriter and publisher.
3. Performance Royalties
Performance royalties are paid whenever a song is performed publicly. This includes radio plays, live shows, playing in a retail store, or streaming. These are collected by Performance Rights Organizations (PROs) like ASCAP or BMI.
